Bracket Clocks

Rarely made or provided with a bracket, clocks which sit perfectly on a table or mantle shelf have acquired the all purpose name of the ‘bracket clock’.

Mechanically the bracket clock is very similar to the longcase clock. One significant difference however is that the bracket clock is powered by a coiled spring and not a weight. This feature gives the bracket clock a degree of portability. Generally a weight driven clock such as the Longcase is more accurate than a spring driven clock as the motive force (i.e. the weight) is constant. Hence the introduction of the Fusee, which fitted to quality bracket clocks, provided much more accurate timekeeping qualities.
